Nature Travel attended the 2nd UNWTO International Conference on Tourism and the Media, with this year’s theme “Partnering with the Media in Challenging Times”
The conference included speakers from Abercrombie & Kent, CNN, The Huffington Post, The Independent, Deutsche Welle TV and digital media experts, and a round table discussion that provided some substantial ideas and also hope for tourism industry attendees. The event was opened by Mounir Fakhry Abdel-Nour, Minister of Tourism, Egypt and Taleb Rifai, Secretary-General, UNWTO.
They underlined the importance of tourism businesses learning to understand HOW the media works, so that tourism stories are not just PR releases, but real news and worthy of prime space in the different media, and gave interesting examples of how to develop relationships with your online readers (and potential customers).
The conference was held in beautiful Marsa Alam, on the other side of the Sinai Peninsula to Nature Travel’s home of Nuweiba, and it was worth the long trip to hear about the potential for the tourism industry to better understand the media and how to make their destinations more newsworthy.
